Abstract—This study explored how online text-based chat influenced college students' engagement, learning and performance in the traditional (face-to-face) setting. Specifically, the study examined and tested the effects of using a popular online chat tool (Zoom chat) in in-person class participation on student learning and course performance. Data from 180 undergraduate students participating in an in-person course of international business between 2021 and 2023 showed that the Zoom chat frequencies of the students in classroom were positively related to their learning and performance in the course. The pedagogical and research implications from this research are discussed.
